- Amnesty International is the world's largest Human Rights organization. It was founded in 1961 by Peter Benenson, an English lawyer, who read an article about four Portuguese students who had been jailed for making a toast to freedom. He led a letter-writing campaign that eventually freed the students, and ever since, Amnesty has worked to protect human rights across the globe. We are the Penn State Chapter.
